Medfly Lyrics

Back in the late 70's or early 80's, there was the
Great Mediterranean Fruit Fly Scare
which involved helicopters flying over at night,
spraying malathion on our cars and houses, as well as our plants.

It ruined car paint jobs and caused all kinds of problems.

So KOME re-did a number of famous tunes with Medfly-related lyrics.

At Jona's request, here are two of them.

Med Fly California

to the tune of "Sweet Home Alabama"
Lyrics by Ted Kopulos

Big wheels keep on fighting
About this malathion mess.
What to do about the fruit fly
They'll just never know, I guess.

Med Fly California
Dead fruit ev'rywhere
So bad let me warn ya
Now they're sprayin' in the air.

In Sacramento, there's a governor (Hi, Jerry!)
Didn't know just what to do (uh-huh)
Said "No spraying!" but they did it!
Haven't heard from him, have you?

Med Fly California
Dead fruit ev'rywhere
So bad let me warn ya
Now they're sprayin' in the air.

[Instrumental]

Med Fly California
Dead fruit ev'rywhere (uh-huh)
So bad let me warn ya
Now they're sprayin' in the air.

So I say to you, my brothers:
"Don't eat fruit that's strange to you!.
And someday that damn old med fly
May find someone else to screw!".

Med Fly California
Dead fruit ev'rywhere
So bad let me warn ya
Now they're sprayin' in the air.
Now they're sprayin' in the air.
Now they're sprayin' in the air.

What a Fly Believes

to the tune of "What a Fool Believes"
Lyrics by Ted Kopulos

He came from somewhere out of a vegetable
Apples, oranges or an avacado.
Came a long, long way for a date to be cremated,
What a rough life!

He came to the bay
For a holiday.
Never knowing why we chased him away
Or shot him with our spray
He didn't realize.

He
thought he finally found home.
We
will make sure he never will roam.

As he rises for a getaway
Everybody else is sure to know
We won't let him go.

But what a fly believes, he sees
No white man has the powder
To shoo him away

What seems to be
A fruit fly may be nothing
But nothing at all
Just couldn't come from
